DVSA-approved rider training schools run the full progression from Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) through the A2 route and Direct Access Scheme (DAS) to the two-part practical test. You need a valid CBT certificate to ride on public roads as a learner, and the certificate is valid for two years. Every school listed here has been checked against a primary source before it goes live.

What is a CBT and do I need one?

Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) is a one-day course every new moped and motorcycle rider must complete before riding on public roads in the UK. It covers basic controls, on-site riding and on-road riding with a qualified DVSA-approved instructor. You receive a Certificate of Completion (DL196) valid for two years. After that you need a new CBT or a full motorcycle licence.

What is the Direct Access Scheme (DAS)?

The Direct Access Scheme lets riders aged 24 or over go straight to a full Category A licence without spending time on a restricted bike. You train and test on a large motorcycle. Riders aged 21 to 23 can access DAS via an A2 licence first, then an A licence from age 21 after two years.

How long does it take to get a full motorcycle licence?

After your CBT you need to pass the motorcycle theory test, then the two-part practical test (Module 1, off-road manoeuvres, and Module 2, on-road riding). Most riders complete the full sequence with intensive Direct Access training in around a week of lessons and tests, though it can be spread over several months.

What is an A2 motorcycle licence?

An A2 licence is available to riders aged 19 or over and restricts you to bikes with a maximum power of 35 kW (about 47 bhp) and a power-to-weight ratio no greater than 0.2 kW/kg. After holding an A2 for two years and reaching age 21, you can take a further test to upgrade to a full A licence.

How much does a CBT cost?

CBT prices are set by each training school, not by the DVSA. Most UK schools charge between £130 and £175 for the full day, which typically includes use of the school's motorcycle and most protective equipment. Prices in cities and London tend to sit at the upper end of the range.

What can I ride after passing my CBT?

With your DL196 CBT certificate you can ride on public roads with L-plates. You are limited to a 125cc motorcycle or a 50cc moped. You cannot carry a pillion passenger and you cannot use motorways. The certificate is valid for two years; after that you need a new CBT or a full motorcycle licence.
