What motorbike gear must I legally wear in the UK?

The only legal requirement is a helmet that meets the current UK standard: UN ECE 22.06 or BS 6658:1985 with the BSI kitemark. All other gear is not compulsory, but a protective jacket, trousers, gloves and boots significantly reduce the severity of injuries in a fall.

What does CE Level 1 or Level 2 mean on motorcycle clothing?

CE ratings show the impact protection a piece of gear provides, based on tests set out in European standard EN 13595 (full suits) or EN 13634 (boots). Level 1 provides basic protection; Level 2 meets a higher standard. Back protectors are rated separately to the same two-level scale. Level 2 back protection is strongly recommended.

How do I choose the right motorcycle helmet?

The helmet must pass the UN ECE 22.06 standard (the current UK benchmark) and fit your head without gaps or pressure points. Try it on and wear it for a few minutes: it should feel snug across the cheeks and brow without being painful. Full-face helmets offer the most protection; open-face and modular helmets are also legal but protect less of the face.

What is the SHARP rating for motorcycle helmets?

SHARP (Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme) is a free UK government scheme run by the Department for Transport that independently tests motorcycle helmets for impact protection. Helmets are rated one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best performance in crash tests. The full SHARP ratings database is publicly searchable and covers helmets sold legally in the UK.
